An original design

We have 3 small-ish dogs in our house. One of them loves to wear clothes, one other didn't have any, and the smallest runs and hides when you say "sweater"... haha  So my dog Flint, who is a Coton de Tulear, loves his clothes. The original sweater I made for our Chihuahua Alonso, was too big, so Flint inherited it. When I was at Petco a couple of weeks I spotted a sweater that I wanted for Alonso. Again.... he's too big for the small stuff and too small for the medium sizes, so Flint inherited the sweater and hasn't taken it off since.

My daughter has the Chihuahua, and a mutt. The Chihuahua's name is Alonso as I mentioned above, and the mutt is Charlie.  Well Charlie has never had any clothing other than the jacket he wears outside in the winter. My daughter didn't think it was fair that Charlie didn't have a sweater. So after listening to her complain about it, I decided to make one for him.

I couldn't really find a pattern that I liked, and that I thought would be easy enough to study a couple of patterns and adjust to his size. He has a long body with a round chest and narrow hips. He's supposed to be a cross of a Shitzu and Pekingese. However, he howls like a beagle.. so we really aren't sure what he is. We love him anyway.

I decided to wing it with Charlie's sweater, and this is what I came up with. I made the back in a flat piece with ribbing at the top and bottom. Threw in a couple of snowflakes and some designs and that was basically it for that piece. I was looking at the sweater that Flint is wearing, and it was just a flat back with a piece underneath. So, I set out to make the under-piece. After adjusting a few times, and then crocheting around it, to make it bigger and longer, it was done.  This is the end result.

And Charlie modeling the end result!

I had fun making this up as I went along. One of these days I might actually make one for Alonso that he won't run away from..  ;)
