Light and Lacy Scarf

For my birthday the hubster bought me some of the Addi-Click Interchangeable needles. These are made for knitting with lace, and they have a more tapered tip which is great when working with fine yarns. I have been looking at tons of lace patterns, and having a hard time to decide on what to make. I love all the beautiful lace-work shawls that are posted on the web, but I dont have the attention span to work on a large project like that. I get bored easily, so I spend my time doing smaller projects that work up quickly. I came across a basic lace scarf pattern. Again, my friend Deb came to mind. She has the most gorgeous array of scarves, and I wanted to make something to add to her collection. Mind you, I hate doing scarves as they take too long, and they are too long! But, when working in a general lace pattern, there are lots of holes, and that makes the pattern go by faster. I found some lace yarn at Hobbylobby, and it even had sequins in it! Again, Deb came right to mind. I

An original design

We have 3 small-ish dogs in our house. One of them loves to wear clothes, one other didn't have any, and the smallest runs and hides when you say "sweater"... haha  So my dog Flint, who is a Coton de Tulear, loves his clothes. The original sweater I made for our Chihuahua Alonso, was too big, so Flint inherited it. When I was at Petco a couple of weeks I spotted a sweater that I wanted for Alonso. Again.... he's too big for the small stuff and too small for the medium sizes, so Flint inherited the sweater and hasn't taken it off since. My daughter has the Chihuahua, and a mutt. The Chihuahua's name is Alonso as I mentioned above, and the mutt is Charlie.  Well Charlie has never had any clothing other than the jacket he wears outside in the winter. My daughter didn't think it was fair that Charlie didn't have a sweater. So after listening to her complain about it, I decided to make one for him. I couldn't really find a pattern that I liked,

Still snowing, Simple Snowflake Revisited

Back in December I tried out some stranded colorwork, a Snowflake patterned hat by  LaVon Murphy .   That post is here   if you would like to see it.  In case you haven't heard, Maine has been hit with successive snowstorms since Thanksgiving. We have so much snow, it's getting hard to find places to put it all! I really wanted to do another of the snowflake hats, since I was so in love with the blue and white one from my previous post. Fortunately for me, my daughter decided that she would like one. We went into my yarn stash and she picked out her colors. The result is below. I love how it came out! I used a basic worsted for each of the colors. The top is a little pointy, and you can either block it to sit flatter, or put a tassle or pom-pom on the top. My daughter liked hers plain.  The Simple Snowflake  pattern   can be found on Ravelry. You do need an account to get the pattern from there, but it's free, and it's a fun place to meet other knitte

Warm and Fuzzy

We all know what warm and fuzzy means... so when I started these mittens, I decided that would be the perfect name for them.  In a previous post  Cabled Headband for Deb        you can see the beautiful headband. I wanted her to have the mittens to match. I had originally bought the softer of the two yarns, to make a cowl. But, after seeing the fuzziness coming off on my black pants, I realized that it would make a mess on a dark sweater. Deb wears a lot of darks, so I knew that would be an issue. Mittens to the rescue! Love how they turned out!  The  pattern  I used was:   Classic Mittens This pattern includes both straight needles and circular/dpn patterns.  It's an old favorite, and I use it almost all the time. I used both the shiny and the soft yarn together, which made very tightly knitted stitches. It became a little difficult with the bamboo needles, (size 4 US), and they actually warped a bit from the tension. I probably won't do another pair of doubl

Cabled Headband for Deb

My friend Deb has beautiful long hair, and can wear anything in it or on it, and she looks great. I asked her what she would like for a hat, and she requested a headband of some sort. I pawed through tons of patterns, looking for something that I felt was "her".. when I saw this.. I knew it was the one. But, the dilemma at that point was to find the right yarn to fit what I envisioned in my head. I searched all over Bangor and was ready to head to Waterville, but decided to pop into Hobby Lobby just for kicks. It was there that I found Yarn Bee "Soft Secret" in Soft Pink. I definitely had been looking for pink, I just needed something that would pop but not be outrageous or dull either.. that just isn't my friend Deb  ;0)  This yarn has a beautiful sheen to it, and it really brings out the cabling. I will get a picture of her in it asap and post here.   Cabled Headband by  Doris Formby ***************** ******* © Louise Cu

Elvira

When I first laid eyes on this pattern, I was struck by the beautiful smocking of the brim. I just HAD to download the pattern, and even better, it's free! I had some leftover baby yarn from a sweater I made a few years ago, so I decided I would try this pattern with that and see how it comes out. About half way, my husband made remarks that the hat was in "baby colors'', and yes, he was correct, but I happen to love the coloring, so I decided to keep going, and I am so pleased with the result. As of right now, this hat is for me!  Elvira by Alyssa Heath Proudly modeled by Debra. It's a flake

I have always admired knitted items with exquisite designs on them. Since I've never had the patience to do a really intense project, I wanted to start with something relatively simple.  Being that it is winter in Maine, I decided to try my first snowflake hat. I LOVE how it came out!  ( I see many more in my future in an assortment of colors... )  As I was knitting happily along, I was thinking about who this hat would be for. The first person that came to mind is a very sweet gal who takes great care of me at Starbucks. :)  Wanted to bless her with a little something for her holiday and the long Maine winter.  The Simple Snowflake by  LaVon Murphy The Simple Snowflake  pattern  can be found on Ravelry.
